ABOUT THE ARTIST

Feeling daunted by the larger social and political landscape, I prefer to concentrate on the local, the immediate, the familiar. These subjects soothe my soul and amuse me, as well as reminding me to be grateful to live here in West Marin, with so much natural beauty and so many enlightened individuals.

I am as interested in the shapes and expressions of people as I am in the landscape – more, maybe. That continues to be the focus of my painting. I take pictures of people I want to paint and work slowly, in oil paint, from those photographs. I’m fortunate to have a studio on the property where I live, on Inverness Ridge in Point Reyes, where I am surrounded by light, trees, birds, cats, foxes, and family. That seems to be the perfect recipe for my work. That, and some travel now and then.

I was trained in painting at The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, The Chicago Art Institute, The Art Students League and the School of Visual Art in NY.

For many years I had an interior design business as J Thompson Design, as well as doing hands on decorative painting and home staging for realtors. Since 2016 I have been concentrating on painting on canvas, with an emphasis on portraits.
